Two of Wales’ top marketing experts are appointed onto Wales Board

Two of Wales’ top marketing experts, Siân Thomas and Carol Jones, have been appointed onto the Wales board of The Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Siân Thomas, Head of Communications at Sports Council Wales and Carol Jones, Head of Marketing and Sales at Chapter Arts Centre, will represent two of Wales’ most important sectors, arts and sports, on the board.

They will join nine other members of the board, of which more than half are women, in offering their expertise and advice to members of The Institute whilst working to help develop, expand and increase the profile of marketing in Wales.

Siân Thomas is responsible for the Sports Council’s marketing, press, public affairs and research and leads a team of fifteen staff. Her previous role was head of Marketing and Media at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, where she managed the launch of a new brand identity, developed an Audience Development strategy as well as coordinating an international PR strategy to support the key artworks in the US.

Siân who also has experience of working in a PR and public affairs capacity for a range of public sector organisations is a Chartered Marketer and has delivered speeches on brand related matters at two UK conferences.

Carol Jones has worked in arts marketing for over two decades across Europe. Carol is an experienced trainer and sought after speaker, she is also a part-time lecturer in arts marketing at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Carol is known for her dynamic and creative approach and was instrumental in the development of Chapter’s award winning website and initiated the first supermarket style, arts loyalty card in the UK.

Carol has extensive experience in all areas of arts marketing and has a keen interest in collaborative projects; customer-facing technologies and broadening access to the arts for disable people.

Carol Jones, said: "I've been a member of The Chartered Institute of Marketing Cymru for several years and I'm consistently impressed by the way it represents, not just its members, but the voice of marketers across Wales. For me it’s about raising the status of marketers whatever sector you work in and The Institute's focus on training and CPD has played a huge part in this over recent years."

"Arts marketers have to be as creative as the art forms we promote and most
of us work within very tight budgets. I hope my insights and experience will
be valuable in helping The Institute in Wales to continue to build opportunities
over the years ahead.

“My advice to marketers is three fold. The tougher things get the more you need to innovate. You can only be truly creative if you're working from a sound basis of knowledge and experience. Network like crazy - exchanging ideas with other marketers can pay big dividends. And of course,
joining The Institute will help you do all three."

Richard Houdmont, Director for Wales of The Chartered Institute of Marketing, said: “I’m thrilled to welcome Siân and Carol as members of the Wales board. They each bring a wealth of experience in marketing and links to other networks. They will not only represent the arts and sports industries, but also help The Institute in Wales to meet the needs of the wider leisure market and ‘not-for-profit’ sectors.

“Our board now includes representatives of the most important industries in Wales ranging from tourism to manufacturing and it is also representative of our membership of which women members are in the majority.”
