Wales Board Simon Rees

After pursuing a career in B2B marketing in the engineering sector, Simon had the opportunity five years ago to join the family business, a roofing services company in South Wales. The objective was to implement and develop the infrastructure required to continue the growth of the business.

Simon is committed to marketing and after attending many of the locally-run events in Cardiff played an active role in the CIM branch committee. He was an enthusiastic advocate for the establishment of CIM Wales/Cymru and played a key role in its creation, serving as Chair on the Shadow Board which preceded the new elected Board.

South Wales Branch Chair and Board member Jo Corp

Joanna is a management consultant for Enterprise Consulting working on entrepreneurship and marketing programmes associated with the Technium network of incubation centres, International Business Wales, MAS Cymru and Construct Wales. In the past few years she has extended her expertise to event management and has recently organised the MAS Cymru annual conference and Technium Challenge Gala Dinner.

On behalf of Technium, Joanna runs the Technium Challenge competition encouraging new high growth technology businesses to develop their business plans and 'elevator pitches' to a judging panel with winners being offered accommodation in Technium. This involves arranging business support workshops / one to one advice and the judging panels. This year she secured £45,000 in sponsorship.

Prior to Enterprise Consulting, Joanna worked as a business development officer for UWIC and researcher for Newport Business School; she continues to work with Newport as a tutor on the CIM E Marketing Award.  Jo is a Chartered Marketer and has been involved in the South Wales branch committee for 4 years.

North Wales Branch Chair and Board member Carl Mather

Director of Student Support at Coleg Menai. His responsibilities include marketing, recruitment and customer services as well as learning resources and support. Carl is a native of Flintshire and a fluent Welsh speaker, and lives with his wife Dwynwen and two children in Felinheli, Gwynedd.

He holds an MSc from University of Wales Aberystwyth. He has considerable experience as a Marketing manager as well as a teacher of marketing, and has been a Member of CIM since 1998.

Board Member Roger Pride

Roger Pride began his career in the travel/tourism industry with Pickfords Travel before moving to Avis Rent-A-Car.

Roger then had a brief spell outside the travel industry with Golley Slater and Partners, one of Wales' leading advertising agencies, before joining the Wales Tourist Board eventually becoming Director of Marketing.

At the Wales Tourist Board he was responsible for developing all aspects of the Boards Marketing Strategy. He has a particular interest in Destination Branding. He has jointly edited 2 major books on branding places as well as contributing to other branding texts. He developed the branding strategy for Wales Tourist Board, which led to several award winning campaigns for creativity and effectiveness.

He is currently Director of Marketing with the Welsh Assembly Government. In this role he is responsible for all aspects of Wales Marketing Strategy in the fields of tourism, trade and investment and business development. He is also responsible for the professional development of all marketing staff throughout the Welsh Assembly Government. He also advises the First Minister on the wider brand strategy for Wales.

He is a Director of Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd.

Board Member Andrew Barker

Group Managing Director, Mangar International Ltd
Andrew Barker was born in Leeds. He studied European Business Management at Middlesex University and at the Fachhoschule Reutlingen/Germany, graduating in 1989.

He then began his professional career as a management trainee at Volkswagen AG in Germany. In 1990 he moved to Volkswagen Canada as assistant to the president of the company. Subsequently in 1992 he was transferred back to Germany where he took on the role of sales manager for North America.From 1994 to 1998 Andrew Barker was responsible for export sales and marketing of Volkswagen passenger vehicles to Latin and Central America.

In 1998 he was transferred to Volkswagen's Asia Pacific regional headquarters in Singapore where he headed up the marketing and sales planning division for the region.

In March 2005 Andrew Barker was appointed General Manager at Mangar International and subsequently Managing Director the following September. In 2006 he was appointed Group Managing Director for Mangar International and its subsidiary MFC Survival.

He received his MBA from Henley Management College in 2004. Andrew Barker is also a member of the Chartered Management Institute, The chartered institute of marketing, the Institute of Directors and is a Chartered Marketer.

Chair, Wales Board Jonathan Deacon

Head of Post Graduate programmes at the University of Wales, Newport Business School. He is a visiting lecturer at Cardiff University specialising in the commercialisation of knowledge. A founder member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing's Professional Body Board Jonathan has been active within the CIM at branch (chair) and regional level for 10 years and within the Academy of Marketing as a member of the steering groups for the SIG Entrepreneurial and Small Business Marketing and the MIG Small Business Marketing. He has recently been elected as a Fellow of the institute. He is a member of the American Marketing Association and a member of the AMA SIG Marketing at the Entrepreneurship Interface.

Jonathan has published academic and practitioner related work both in Europe and the US with a focus upon Market Development for Small Firms. Jonathan is a regular contributor to the regional and national press and recently completed his PhD in Marketing and Small Firms, at Ulster University with Professors Carson and Gilmore.

Board member Laura Dodds

With 9 years marketing experience, Laura is currently employed as Account Director at award winning Welsh Marketing Communication agency FBA, based in Aberystwyth where she is responsible for managing food and drink clients including Rachel’s Organic and Sunscoop.

Previously, Laura spent 3 and a half years working as Brand Manager for one of Wales’ best known and most successful international companies, Ty Nant Spring Water Ltd, where she was tasked with managing all marketing activity for the company’s iconic brands, Ty Nant and TAU.

A graduate of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Laura has also worked for for an environmental monitoring SME and enjoyed a spell as Marketing Manager at Aberystwyth University, during which she was responsible for promoting UWA’s extensive Third Mission expertise to the business world.

A committed marketer, Laura holds the Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing and is currently working towards chartered marketer status.

Board member Bethan Sian Jones

Bethan Sian Jones is project manager of True Food Marketing, a service delivered by Menter a Busnes. She is responsible for the development and delivery of marketing support services to the food sector.

Before joining True Food Marketing, Bethan was Managing Director of the Export Association – Wales, working in a variety of sectors in international marketing.

Previously, she spent her early career in retail management with the Owen Owen Group PLC. She is a graduate of Nottingham University.

Board member Siân Thomas

Siân Thomas is Head Communications at Sports Council Wales.

Responsible for marketing, press, public affairs and research, Siân leads a team of fifteen staff.

Siân's previous role was Head of Marketing & Media at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales where she managed the launch of a new brand identity, developed an Audience Development strategy for the organisation and co-ordinated an international PR strategy to support the tour of key artworks to 5 venues in the US from March 2009. She also advised the Welsh Assembly Government on marketing communications to support the development of an ambitious online ‘national collections’ portal.

An International Politics graduate, Siân worked in a PR and public affairs capacity for a range of public sector organisations before undertaking a senior marketing role at one of Wales’ largest further education colleges.

Siân has a Masters degree in Marketing, achieving distinction for her work on the subject of internal communication, and a national marketing award for her projects at Swansea College. She is also a Chartered Marketer and a board member of arts marketing agency Audiences Wales.

Siân has delivered speeches on brand-related matters at two UK conferences: Branding & Innovation in Marketing (23 March 2006, Newcastle Gateshead) and Marketing the Museum: Building the Brand (27 June 2007, National Portrait Gallery, London).

Board member Carol Jones

Carol Jones is Head of Marketing and Sales at Chapter Arts Centre, one of the foremost centres for contemporary arts in Europe. She has worked in arts marketing for over two decades starting in 1986 at Cardiff Arts Marketing followed by a period of freelance work with venues and companies across Europe.

Carol is an experienced trainer and a sought-after speaker and has developed and run courses across the UK and mainland Europe. She is also a part-time lecturer and leads the arts marketing module in the Arts Management Postgraduate Diploma and MA at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Carol is known for her dynamic and creative approach and was instrumental in the development of Chapter's award-winning website at www.chapter.org (Wales’ first cultural website) and also initiated the first supermarket-style, arts loyalty card in the UK which has been described in the press as ‘a world class initiative’.

Carol has extensive experience in all areas of arts marketing and has a keen interest in collaborative projects, customer-facing technologies and broadening access to the arts for disabled people. She is a trained audio describer and has written and delivered scripts for cinema, theatre, exhibitions and ballet.

Carol is a member of both The Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and is a National Adviser for the Arts Council of Wales.
